Installation Guides

Everything you need to know to fit your artificial lawn…

How to replace your existing lawn

If you do not want to pay a landscape gardener to lay your artificial grass and you want to have a go yourself, below you will find a guide on how best to install your grass. With some basic tools, a weekend of your time and a little bit of care, you soon could be sitting in your dream garden. All thanks to your hard work and our superb products here at Grass Next Day.

Step 1

Most outdoor applications require a preparation of an aggregate base to allow proper water drainage.

Work out the height you want your grass to be and the height of the materials you will be using.

Remove turf/topsoil to a depth of approximately two/four inches where your artificial grass is to be fitted and weed kill the area.

Step 2

Cover the prepared area with two/four inches approximately of type 1 hardcore.

Step 3

Once the area is covered, compact the hardcore using a vibrating plate/roller. The area needs to be porous, but firm.

Step 4

Once the area is compact, cover the area with a coarse sand to your levelled area.

Step 5

Using the vibrating plate/roller, compact the sand and top up as required to achieve the desired level.

Step 6

Once you are happy with your base, cover the area with a good quality weed barrier securing with landscape pegs.

Step 7

Unroll your fresh, new artificial lawn and carefully position the grass on top of the sand. Do not drag it on as this will damage your levelling work on the base. Always make sure you check the pile direction of your artificial lawn. Try laying your lawn in the opposite direction to check the shade from one angle to the next. You may find you like the way your artificial lawn lays when turned around. Most important to get this right before you start cutting it to shape.

Leave the grass for around 24 hours to settle. This will allow the pre rolled grass time to settle with any creases time to come out and the pile to settle.

Step 8

Once you have allowed the grass to settle, cut and trim the grass using a sharp Stanley type knife, ensuring you cut the grass neat to the edge of walls, decking and patios.

Anchor your artificial lawn to the ground using landscaping pegs approximately every one metre.

Step 9

Once you are happy with the results, brush the pile with a stiff broom then stand back and admire your handiwork!

How to install on hard surfaces

Step 1

Your artificial grass can easily be installed onto any concrete or hard/smooth surface including decking, as long as it drains.

Step 2

Ensure the area is clear of any debris. Uneven concrete bases or patios should be levelled/smoothed. A levelling compound should be used to cover any imperfections.

Step 3

Unroll your fresh, new artificial lawn and carefully position on your base.

This will allow the pre rolled grass time to settle with any creases time to come out and the pile to settle

Step 4

Once you have allowed the grass to settle, cut and trim the grass using a sharp Stanley type knife, ensuring you cut the grass neat to the edge of walls, decking and patios.

Step 5

On smaller areas, your artificial grass will stay flat under its own weight. Plant pots or garden ornaments will hold your grass in place that may be exposed to strong winds.

On larger areas, apply a bead of adhesive to floor around the perimeter and place weights on it until adhesive cures.

Step 6

Once you are happy with the results, brush the pile with a stiff broom then stand back and admire your handiwork!

Seaming

Ensure the pile of the artificial grass is running in the same direction.

Fold back the two edges, lay joint tape the length of the seam.

Apply aqua bond seaming adhesive to the tape in a zig zag line.

Carefully ease the two edges together ensuring a good tight fit as you go.

Firmly press along the length of the seam to ensure the adhesive sticks correctly and leave to dry.

Once you are happy with the results, brush the pile with a stiff broom then stand back and admire your handiwork!
